Creating connectivity
Creating connections and adding links, gives purpose and meaning to the happenings
OVERVIEW
OVERVIEW
During the pandemic, food wastage and hunger crises both have elevated simultaneously. Considering the restaurant industry during the time of pandemic where business is very unpredictable because of the lockdown and time restrictions which lead to wasted surplus food. At the same instance, there are a lot of NGOs and communities suffering from a shortage of food and resources.
How can one channelise and create connectivity between restaurants and NGOs so that the excess food can reach the ones who are in need and tackle the food wastage and hunger crisis at the same time?

Methods and Methodologies
Methods and Methodologies
Underlining the given problem statement: to create connectivity andlinkages as a system between restaurants and hunger spots. I would suggest and emphasise methods combining sociology and anthropology with design thinking to understand different aspects of the problem from the experience of the stakeholders in the system and at the same time reciprocating to the provided qualitative information, to understand the intricacy of the problem, and create a system with connection from the methods and approaches that can be used are narrative enquiry, behavioural mapping, contextual enquiries, qualitative observations, participatory research, and qualitative surveys.
These methods will help us to understand the in-field problems and experiences and mental models of the stakeholders.
With the given time frame and scope of the project, I have not conducted any primary research. The mentioned methods are suggested for an in-depth research and understanding of the problem. The progressed outcome and iteration mentioned are on the basis of secondary research insights and my observational assumption.

A single definition can not be similar for every individual. Memory is a fluid term. It stands out to be different for different people. With time new technologies have replaced the traditional ways of storing memories. But these technological changes are also affecting us and creating changes in and around us.
To depict those changes and understand and outline the concerns. Created a series of abstract narration focusing on those scenarios to gather insights about how these changes are creating an impact on the human mind.

Connecting Dots
By the year 2030, the world must be rid of hunger, according to Sustainable Development Goal 2. With this goal as a vision, 828 million people were affected by hunger in 2021 – 46 million people more than a year earlier and 150 million more from 2019. An astounding 2.4 billion people, or more than 30% of the world's population, were also food
insecure in 2020, meaning they lacked regular access to enough food.
In the context of India, it is a great paradox a country which has 16.30% hunger statistics in the year 2020 with an increment of 1.7% from the previous year, wastes INR 50,000 crores worth of food produced every year according to the agriculture ministry of India.
The amount of food wastage in India is almost equivalent to the whole of what the United Kingdom consumes a statistic that may not be so much indicative of our love of surfeit, as it is of our population. Still, food wastage is an alarming issue in India. Our street and garbage bins and landfills have sufficient proof to prove it.
The wastage of food majorly comes from households, restaurants and big events.
In the context of restaurants, it is not completely possible to predict the amount of food to be cooked. Apart from excess cooking the excess buying of raw materials and not access to proper storage are also the reasons for food wastage in restaurants.
With a globally defined goal, there is no in-field work that supports the vision or the cause. There are multiple NGOs and civic-tech platforms that have locally tried to channelise the system and tried creating connectivity through social media and local advertisements. But with all these happenings one can observe unawareness of the consequences, lack of initiative and communication.
There is a need for a system that creates connectivity and communication between the stakeholders and establishes the cause in a manner that spreads awareness and creates a purpose around the same.

Stakeholder Mapping
Stakeholder Mapping
Stakeholders will be the elements through which one can intervene in the situation and try to bridge a system with their experiences. It will help to create a sense of understanding of the impact of the problem
and how and through what linkages one can initiate interactions which can be relevant to the given context.
Restaurants and NGOs serving people in need are primary stakeholders. Apart from the normal households also contribute to food wastage and they are secondary stakeholders, with them government bodies regulating policies and the delivery agents. Delivery agents and food delivery companies like Swiggy and Zomato are the secondary stakeholders as there is no direct impact on them in the situation but their experience can be leveraged to create a system.

The right to food is an implication of the fundamental right to life enshrined in Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, yet more than 1.2 billion people are dying due to hunger per day.
In the same city, the same locality, there is a part where people are starving for food, and there is a part where food is being thrown; it's an ironic truth. Lack of communication and initiative is costing lives.
There is a need to create a network between the stakeholders involved in the system so that the excess food can be helpful and be served to the needy. And also create an impact through which people can be aware of their actions and the happenings.
With the era of fast-moving technology and access to the internet and internet-based application, it can be a medium to intervene in the situation and try to create a connectivity with a system.

Proposed System
Proposed System
In India today, delivery services like Swiggy, Zomato, and Blinkit have reached almost every metro city. To cater a solution to the food wastage problem, the delivery agents of these services can be significant network building blocks. As These delivery agents are already in touch and have an understanding of the locality.
The creation of a system can be initiated by the integration of an application with these delivery services as a CSR and marketing strategy which will involve NGOs, restaurants and delivery service

How will the system work?
How will the system work?
An application that can be integrated with existing delivery services, that already have delivery agents on the field. This will make it possible to create connectivity in the locality between NGOs and restaurants
through delivery services.
Any NGO will be able to register on the application providing details of what locality and how many people they work with to eradicate hunger in the area. There will also be a verification process for the NGO so they
can verify themselves and the other stakeholders can have trust in the organisation. Once the NGO is verified they can mark the hunger spot on the application with the GPS map.
Similarly, as NGOs restaurants that are part of any delivery agency or not can also register themselves in the application with verification, verification will ensure trust and make the process smooth. Restaurants will be interested in a system because they will have the leverage of donating food rather than dumping and disposing of it which needs man labour, with the help of the application after a given time they can mention how many plates or quantity of food is available that they want to donate.
Now delivery agents of different delivery services will be the network block between the restaurants and hunger spots.

Why will the delivery agents be interested in the system?
Why will the delivery agents be interested in the system?
All the delivery services compensate the agents based on incentives that is calculated weekly or monthly depending on the number of deliveries they have worked performed in a day. Apart from this, they get a night shift and rainy day incentives. Similarly for performing a CSR act of bridging the gap between hunger and extra food, they will be incentivised.
The restaurants will be posting about the extra food by night across 10 PM, and when a delivery agent is about to log out or logged in the system, if they perform a food delivery for CSR causes they will be incentivised for the delivery and also get a value star that will be showcased to their users, which creates trust and value for their profile card.

Why would delivery services be involved in a system as such?
Why would delivery services be involved in a system as such?
Every company has to allocate money for CSR so that will be one of the reasons for them to initiate a system like this, apart from that the appli cation will also have a dashboard that will inform the number of people who are helped by these services and their agents.
This number will be predicted based on that one adult on an approx needs 150gm of food. With this number, different agencies can market this and create awareness and cause amongst people which will add value to their name and consumers will be more inclined towards them to use the service apart from that they can also charge money from the consumer to the delivery agent as a donation for the cause.

What if?
What if?
It is a system to build connectivity and network and people aware of the happenings, but it does not hundred per cent ensure that all the hunger spots will be fed it is an initiative-based system depending on the motive of the people involved. But the application provides transparency between restaurants and NGOs and if they do not have any delivery agent delivering the food they can use social media or physical means to get in contact and have communication with the restaurants and physically do the transportation.

Assumption and Scope
With the given time frame and scope of the project, I have not conducted any primary research. The progressed outcome and iteration mentioned are on the basis of secondary research insights and my observational assumptions.
This system can be taken forward with more connectivity from restaurants to events like marriage and birthday parties and partnering with more agencies for smooth delivery of bigger donations.
There can also be a possibility of partnering with global and national causes for food management and creating an independent product with civic tech and NGOs.
